Ways to Conserve Water

You may want to switch to green plumbing options for the sake of saving money, saving energy or healthier living. However, one of the primary reasons why many people go green with their plumbing is to conserve water, a precious natural resource. If you're interested in learning ways to conserve water, read on.

Our current methods of purifying water leave a lot to be desired. Every time we can conserve water, we save that precious resource from having to cycle through the system yet one more time. You also will save money if you use water-conserving plumbing systems, but really, that cost savings is secondary to the wonderful impact you will be having on our world at large and the generations to come.

The following are suggestions for green plumbing for the sake of water conservation.

Install Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets

Lower your water usage by up to 60 percent by installing low-flow showerheads and sink faucets. Not only do these fixtures use less water, but they also use less hot water, meaning you won’t be paying to heat as much water (bonus: more energy savings!)

Install Low-Flush Toilets

Most people flush 28 gallons of water every day. That’s a lot of water! A low-flush toilet uses between ⅕ to ½ the water of an average toilet, depending on what kind you buy. Some have two settings, so you can choose to use more or less water when flushing, depending on the need.

Install Water Cops

Water Cops (or a similar leak detection system) lets you know when you have a leak somewhere. Not only will this help you catch a leak quickly, saving you high water bills, but it will also save you from undetected water damage. This is especially helpful if you have a water heater, washing machine or other appliance somewhere where a leak might not be visibly detected very quickly. Don’t wait until the water heater in your attic leaks and causes your ceiling to rot; install a leak detection system so you’ll know the moment something goes wrong - long before water damage occurs.

Install Faucet Flow Reducers

Lower water flow from your faucets by up to 40 percent by installing these simple flow reducers. You can buy these at your local hardware store and install them yourself, no problem. They are inexpensive and effective.

Install Energy-Efficient Appliances

Is it time to replace your washing machine or dishwasher? Energy efficient appliances have improved so much that they truly get the job done while using up to half the amount of water their predecessors used.
